Title III STEM LTS proposes a STEM Internship Program within the College of Agriculture, Life, and Physical Sciences (ALPS), to provide an environment to help retain students interested in STEM careers, while encouraging the growth of faculty-student relationships and a personalized education in potential STEM careers.

Network Services Intern
Mentored by Paula Arredondo
Works with the Director of Network Services to support the installation and maintenance of network infrastructure technology. This person will work with OIT staff to reliably deliver network connectivity across all SRSU campuses.

DevTeam Intern (BRI)
Mentored by Alex Hettena
Collaborate with the Construction Project Manager to assist in various aspects of construction projects, gaining hands-on experience in the field. This position will focus on project support, maintaining construction sites, and participating in educational outreach initiatives.

Kilian McDonald-Boyer

Greenhouse Intern - Biology

Mentor: Kelsey Wogan

Kilian is a Junior at SRSU studying Biology with a minor in Chemistry.

From Azle, Texas, Kilian was in the top ten percent of her high school graduating class. She gained experience with animals and plants by participating in FFA and livestock shows.

During the 2022-2023 academic school year, she made the Dean’s list for both semesters and was awarded the Outstanding Student award in Introductory Chemistry. She is currently active in the SRSU Student Government Association serving as the Vice President and is also serving as the TSUS Student Advisory Board Parliamentarian. Her hobbies include painting, working out, baking, and being outside.

Vertebrate Collection Curatorial Intern - Biology

Mentor: Dr. Christopher Ritzi

SJ is a senior at SRSU studying Biology with a minor in Natural Resource Management. Her academic interests include herpetology, botany, ecology, and wildlife conservation—she enjoys many aspects of Biology!

Originally from Plainfield, New Jersey, SJ enjoys being outdoors and is happiest when she’s camping, hiking, or exploring new places. After attending college periodically while working full-time for HEB in Austin, SJ’s passion for learning influenced her to move to Alpine in the Summer of 2022 to finish her degree in Biology at SRSU.

SJ intends to attend SRSU to obtain her master’s degree in Biology. She is the current secretary of the Biology Club and a former McNair Scholar.

Syndilyn Maguglin

Avian Acoustic Analysis Intern - Natural Resource Management

Mentor: Dr. Maureen Frank

Syndilyn is a sophomore at SRSU studying Range and Wildlife Management with a concentration in Conservation Biology. Born and raised in Three Rivers, Texas, Syndilyn is a first-generation college student and sixth-generation cattle rancher who grew up on her family’s ranches in South Texas.

Syndilyn has competed at the national level in flight archery, representing the U.S., and has established several world records. She is currently the Conservation Biology Vice President for the Sul Ross Range & Wildlife Club, an active member of the Texas Cattlewomen’s Association, an ambassador member of Miss Rodeo Texas, Miss Rodeo Texas Teen 2022, a member of the Wildlife Society, the National Society for Leadership Success, and currently represents Miss Rodeo Comanche Springs of out Fort Stockton, Texas. She is also a volunteer firefighter with the Alpine Fire Department.

She enjoys bible study in the outdoors, hiking, and bowhunting, and has recently found a new love for birding! She plans to work towards her pilot’s license in the future and continue her love for wildlife and conservation with her degree.

John Polster

Herbarium Curatorial Intern - Biology

Mentors: Kelsey Wogan and Dr. Mike Powell

John is a sophomore at SRSU seeking a degree in Natural Resource Management.

From Hamilton, Texas, he enjoys fishing, hunting, and doing anything outdoors. He shot his first deer at seven years old, and since then, he hasn’t been able to stay out of the woods. He has always loved wildlife and hunted every season he could. When it came to school, the lack of wildlife classes led him to join the Wildlife team as a freshman until his senior year. His team qualified for state every year, and this experience introduced him to plants.

He attended SRSU because of the diverse wildlife and has fallen in love with this region since then.

Jenna Spencer

Simulation and Skills Lab Intern - Nursing

Mentor: Dr. Minerva Gonzales

Jenna, a junior at SRSU, is studying nursing to help people in their time of need. She believes that when others are in the hospital, they are in their most vulnerable state and aspires to be a person they can trust and count on. From Odessa, Texas, Jenna hopes to work as a labor and delivery nurse at Big Bend Regional Medical Center after graduation.

She would like to continue her education to become a Nurse Practitioner and eventually move to a larger city to pursue that goal. She enjoys painting and hanging out with her friends and dog, Bear, in her free time.

Rock, Mineral, and Maps Intern - Geology

Mentor: Dr. Jesse Kelsch

Nathan is a senior at SRSU pursuing a degree in Geology and enjoys hiking, camping, backpacking, kayaking/canoeing, and hunting.

Nathan grew up in Dripping Springs, Texas, and spent a lot of time outdoors. He loved participating in Boy Scouts of America and eventually earned Eagle Scout rank and served in leadership positions in his troop. In 2013 and 2015, he visited Buffalo Trail Scout Ranch near Ft. Davis, Texas, and fell in love with the West Texas region. Once he discovered SRSU, he knew it was the school for him! He has always been interested in rocks, minerals, and fossils, which he often found in Central Texas when he was growing up.

Sebastian Whitten

Industrial Technology Intern - Industrial Technology

Mentor: Keith Nixon

Sebastian (Bash) is a junior at SRSU pursuing a degree in Industrial Technology.

Bash received the Dean’s List Award and graduated with her associate’s degree from North Central Texas prior to attending SRSU. She was a member of the National Honors Society in high school in her hometown, Halton City. She moved to the Big Bend area in 2023 to take a year off school and is now attending SRSU to study Industrial Technology.

Bash has a one-year-old Malinois mix puppy named Penny. She also sells jewelry and wall art through her online Etsy shop. She loves being with her family and enjoys working on her passions.

Aubrey is a junior at SRSU pursuing a degree in Geology.

From Odessa, Texas, Aubrey graduated from Odessa High School in 2023 before attending SRSU. She spends most of her free time hiking, crocheting, or at the gym. Her favorite color is red and her favorite dinosaur is the Tricerotops. Paleontology is one of her passions and she’s super excited to be an intern in the STEM Internship Program.
