The 2020 Spring Term will be my 4th with NURS 3305, and my 7th term as an instructor in on-line forums. Each term has presented both challenges and rewards. It is a special honor to be able to work with students despite the "geographically challenges" associated with living in a rural area of the Texas Hill Country. I've been an oncology nurse for most of my career - but over the past decade I've primarily been involved with advocating for better and more seamless and holistic care of cancer survivors and their families. In fact, my work over the past 2 years has been more or less consumed with co-editing (with colleague Carol P. Curtiss) the text, Cancer Survivorship: Interprofessional, Patient-Centered Approaches to the Seasons of Survival, published by the Oncology Nursing Society: it came in at 639 pages and 38 chapters. It was a labor of love, for sure. I enjoy professional writing, and do everything I can to encourage other nurses to write about what they do. Before this on-line teaching experience, I've been a staff nurse in several settings including a VA hospital, a public health nurse in epidemiology and long-term care facility inspector, faculty in an ADN program, a wound and ostomy nurse, home care nurse, clinical nurse specialist, an oncology product line manager, and President of the Oncology Nursing Society, and CEO of a professional volunteer association. I look forward to the give and take that happens between students and faculty in this 2020 term.
