Dr. Herrera has been a faculty member within the kinesiology department at SRSU since moving to Alpine in 2016. He served the progam coordinator for the MS - Health and Human Performance program from 2017 to 2022, and department chair from 2019-2022. In 2018, after arriving at Sul Ross, he earned his Master of Business Administration. He received his PhD in Health Sciences in 2010 at the University of Sydney, Australia. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from Ohio State University in 2003, followed in a Master of Arts in Behavioral Science from the University of Houston Clear Lake in 2006. 

Dr. Herrera is certified in online teaching through the Online Learning Consortium and Sam Houston State University. He chaired the Strategic Plan Leadership at SRSU, as well as the Campus Wellness Initiative, University Curriculum Committee and the Department Chairs Council.
