Student Publications Team
Purpose
Student Publications are comprised of the Skyline Newspaper and the annual Sage literary magazine.
The Skyline, supervised by Writer In Residence, Pulitzer nominated war correspondent, and novelist Sidney Balman, serves as a beacon for transparency on issues that resonate on campus, in the community, and throughout the state and region. It provides students with an opportunity for high-impact learning on critical issues that touch on politics, government, campus activities, social media, and the law. Operated as a modern news operation, the Skyline publishes news as it happens on its independent website, and monthly in a student-designed print product. Winner of numerous state-wide awards, the Skyline takes advantage of the most advanced social media techniques to promote readership, which stretches from Asia to all the United States. Staff are paid monthly, and expected to attend a weekly Zoom editorial meeting, monitor their beats, develop sources, and submit several stories per month.
The Sage, also supervised by Sidney Balman, is an annual magazine-style publication intended to give students an outlet for publishing writing, art, and photography.
Mission
High-impact learning in a professional setting prepares students to be journalists, artists, and writers, and to function as the eyes and ears of a modern democracy, essential skills that are not always captured in a traditional classroom. In addition to real-life experience in those fields, students will have gained a substantial portfolio of published material that will equip them well for finding that first job in those fields.
Primary Responsibility Area: University-wide
