DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

A school district’s Superintendent oversees and is responsible for an entire school district.  Their responsibilities may include overseeing the school district’s budget, operations, and recruiting, hiring, and evaluating school principals and district office staff.  They establish goals, policies, and procedures, and work with the school board to implement a shared vision.  Superintendents oversee academic achievement and standards and evaluate progress and identifying areas of improvement.

They also facilitate community relations and communication and meet with parents and students.  They represent the district at the local, state, and national levels.  Providing guidance about academics, construction, contracts, custodial services, data analysis, extracurricular activities, facility maintenance, finances, meal operations, personnel, security, and transportation may also be part of a Superintendent’s duties.

A superintendent’s responsibilities can vary widely depending on the size of the district and the number of students. For example, in small districts, the superintendent might personally manage certain programs or departments.

If you are ready to take the next step in your career, Sul Ross State University can help get you there as a Texas Education Agency State Board for Educator Certification certified Superintendent.

Candidates should note that this is a certification only program, and a master’s degree and experience as a school principal are required.
