Alejandro Chávez Treviño was born and raised in the outskirts of Monterrey city, Mexico. Alejandro gained his BS in Biotechnology and Genomics in 2016 at the Autonomous University of Nuevo León (UANL) where he showed particular interest in conservation genetics. Alejandro worked on an undergraduate research project evaluating genetic diversity of immune system genes in grassland birds, eventually leading him to grassland bird ecology. After graduation, he worked several field technician positions including tracking of non-breeding grassland birds in Northern Mexico, evaluating grassland sparrows breeding success in the Northern Great Plains of Montana, and monitoring the fall migration at the banding station of Thunder Cape Bird Observatory in Ontario, Canada. In 2019, Alejandro moved to Alpine, TX to pursuit a master’s degree in Range and Wildlife Management at Sul Ross State University with the Borderlands Research Institute, where he continued his work on grassland bird ecology studying non-breeding community responses to shrub removal in west Texas. After gaining his Master’s degree in 2021, Alejandro started a Ph.D. position at the University of Missouri in Columbia, MO. Between 2021 and 2025, Alejandro studied grassland bird responses to tallgrass prairie restoration and bison reintroduction in public land of Illinois. His work focused on nest-site selection, nesting success, community and population ecology, and bison and Eastern Meadowlark movement. Alejandro successfully defended his dissertation in 2025 and returned to West Texas where he now works as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Sul Ross State University / Borderlands Research Institute. There, he teaches Biostatistics and collaborates with research projects on avian ecology. Alejandro also has strong artistic interests inspired by nature, ecological concepts, and storytelling which he uses to engage with the community for science communication and outreach.
