NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

About the Department

The Department of Natural Sciences at Sul Ross State University brings together the life and earth sciences in a collaborative academic community dedicated to discovery, stewardship, and scientific excellence. Our programs prepare students to understand complex natural systems, address environmental challenges, and pursue meaningful careers in science, education, conservation, and resource management.

Located in Alpine, Texas, the department benefits from one of the most ecologically and geologically diverse regions in North America. The surrounding Chihuahuan Desert, mountain ranges, grasslands, and river systems serve as a living laboratory for teaching, research, and field study.

Our Mission

The Department of Natural Sciences is committed to:

  • Providing rigorous, student-centered education in biological and earth sciences
  • Promoting scientific inquiry through research, field investigation, and laboratory experience
  • Preparing graduates for professional careers, advanced study, and leadership in science-based fields
  • Fostering stewardship of natural resources and responsible engagement with the environment

Through small class sizes and close faculty mentorship, students gain both foundational knowledge and practical experience that prepares them for real-world application.
