Why study Natural Resource Management at Sul Ross?

  • We live, work, and play in the best NRM classroom in Texas! Most of our discipline-specific classes have a field component and students get hands-on experience in an incredible ecoregion.
  • We have close connections with partner agencies and organizations, and local landowners, all of whom can help you connect with jobs after graduation.

How do I apply to the program?

What careers can I pursue with this degree?

  • Our alumni work in a variety of range, wildlife, and conservation careers, including:
    • State (TPWD) and federal (USFWS) biologists
    • Game wardens/conservation officers
    • Private ranch biologists
    • Wildlife refuge staff
    • Range specialists
    • Private wildlife consultants
    • Non-profit organization conservationists (The Nature Conservancy, Texas Wildlife Association)
    • Conservation educators

Will I gain hands-on field experience?

  • Yes! That’s our favorite part of the NRM degree at Sul Ross. In addition to classroom opportunities, you can volunteer or work for research projects that give you hands-on field experience. Our students help identify plants, survey birds, monitor GPS-collared big game, and more.

Can I support a family with a job in Natural Resource Management?

  • Salaries range widely in this field, from entry-level technician positions to seasoned biologists who manage entire refuge systems. Many employers offer competitive salaries and good benefits.
  • If your goal is to be wealthy, this isn’t the degree for you. But if your goal is to make a difference and do work that connects you with natural resources, you can have a rewarding career that is financially sound. Many professionals in this field love having the opportunity to connect their work and personal lives, sharing their passion for the great outdoors with the next generation while earning a paycheck.
