DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

School Principals manage the day-to-day operations of a school.

They work with teachers developing, implementing, and maintaining curriculum standards.  They manage staff, including hiring, firing, and providing professional development.  School Principals manage the school’s budget, including ordering supplies and scheduling maintenance.  They establish and oversee class schedules and enforce school rules and making decisions on disciplinary action.  Principals establish and coordinate security procedures for students, staff, and visitors.  They meet with parents and teachers to discuss students’ progress and behavior.

Providing reports to the district and state including test scores, issues, and student and teacher achievements are part of a principal’s job duties.  They set academic policies and understand and enforce education policy.  They set the tone for the school’s culture.  Principals are responsible for ensuring students receive a quality education, keeping their students and staff happy and performing to the best of their abilities, ensuring all personnel are aware of the school’s goals and working towards them, helping teachers to become better educators and in mentoring students.

Principals need to have strong leadership skills and be able to manage multiple stakeholders, keep an open and transparent dialogue with all members of their school community, be objective in analyzing and applying information, understand how results and processes may impact their school and make decisions based on what is best for their students and staff.
