Recommendation for Certification

After graduation and passing all required TExES certification exams, candidates may apply for certification.

  • Navigate to the TEA website and log into your TEAL account.
  • From the next page, select the View My Educator Certification Account link to access your “blue screen” ECOS page.
  • Update any personal information if it prompts you to do so.
  • From the main menu on the lefthand side, click the Applications dropdown.
  • Then choose the first option, Standard Certificate Texas Program, and click apply.
  • Complete the application, and when you get to the recommendation entity dropdown box, be sure to select, Sul Ross State University – University Based (if graduated with a bachelor’s or master’s degree) OR  Alternative (if graduated as non-degree / certification only)

When this is complete and payment is made to TEA, notify Madison Owen at madison.owen@sulross.edu for SRSU to submit your certification recommendation to TEA.

Program Completion Requirements

To be recommended for Teacher certification by Sul Ross State University all of the following must be in order or otherwise completed by the teacher candidate. Note that is it possible to graduate from Sul Ross State University in a degree program but not meet all requirements for recommendation for certification.

  • In good standing with the Educator Preparation Program having previously applied and been accepted with certification plan approved by the Advisor, Program Coordinator, and Director of Teacher Education and Certification including
    • Overall GPA at Graduation >= 3.00, and
    • Content area GPA at Graduation >= 3.00, and
    • No Education courses below a “C” without repeating for higher grade, and
    • 50 hours of field experience prior to clinical student teaching.
  • Completion of all catalog degree requirements including
    • EC-6 and 4-8 certifications are in the College of Education, and
    • Secondary and All-Level certifications are part of other colleges, and
    • Bachelor’s degree conferred – use mySRSU to access My Degree Plan (DegreeWorks)
      • Transfer students must have all official transcripts sent to Sul Ross State University;
      • Transcripts from foreign institutions may have formal translation requirements.
    • Success in Student Teaching including EDUA/EDSR 460X including
      • Letter grade of A, B, or C, and
      • Positive progression on formal and informal observations during semester, and
      • Final formal observation scoring of all items at Proficient or higher, and
      • Recommendation for standard certification by the Field Supervisor, and
      • Recommendation for standard certification by the Cooperating Teacher, and
      • At least 490 hours of classroom experience approved by the Cooperating Teacher, and
      • All Student forms and activities completed.
    • All required TEA Trainings completed, documented and approved by an Instructor.
    • No major issues with Criminal Background Check.
    • Passing appropriate teaching content TExES test, PPR test and if required, Science of Teaching Reading test; submission of required testing documentation to the Department, including practice test results.

To be recommended for a Graduate Level  certification (Educational Diagnostician, Principal, School Counselor, Superintendent) by Sul Ross State University, all of the following must be in order or otherwise completed by the graduate  candidate for certification. Note that is it possible to graduate from Sul Ross State University in a degree program but not meet all requirements for recommendation for certification. Similarly, some certification programs at Sul Ross State University do not have a degree attached.

  • In good standing with the Educator Preparation Program having previously applied and been accepted with certification plan approved by the Advisor, Program Coordinator, and Director of Teacher Education and Certification including
    • Overall graduate level GPA at graduation or successful completion last required course >= 3.00.
  • Conferred master’s degree or higher from a nationally accredited institution of higher education
    • Sul Ross State University, or
    • At another university, with official transcripts sent to Sul Ross State University;
      • Transcripts from foreign institutions may have formal translation requirements.
    • Completion of all catalog requirements including
      • For degreed programs, if seeking a degree (MEd with certification) with
        • Master’s degree conferred, or
      • For non-degreed programs (certification only), all final grades posted – use mySRSU to access My Degree Plan (DegreeWorks).
    • Success in Practicum course including
      • Letter grade of A or B, and
      • Positive progression on formal and informal observations during semester(s), and
      • Recommendation for standard certification by the Field Supervisor, and
      • Recommendation for standard certification by the Site Supervisor
      • At least 160 hours of practicum experience approved by the Site Supervisor
      • All Student forms and activities completed
    • All required TEA Trainings completed, documented and approved by an instructor
    • Passing appropriate TExES test; submission of required testing documentation to the Department, including practice test results.
