As President of the Texas Council of Faculty Senates, Dr. Joseph Velasco helps oversee the largest statewide federation of faculty governance leadership in the United States. Under his direction, the TCFS coordinates, supports, and represents faculty governance organizations primarily in matters of professional standards and academic responsibility to government and other bodies. In addition to his service to the TCFS, Dr. Velasco is an active member of the American Association of University Professors, the Texas Association of College Teachers, and the National Council of Faculty Senates.
Dr. Velasco has higher education leadership experience at the university, system, state, and national levels. He is a founding executive board member of the National Council of Faculty Senates; and, as an external consultant, assists with the Texas A&M University System Assembly of Faculty Senates – a systemwide faculty governance body. He served two terms as President of the Texas State University System Council of Faculty Senates. At Sul Ross State University, he served two terms as President of the Faculty Assembly, and he served as a department chair for two different departments: (1) Industrial Technology and (2) Criminal Justice & Homeland Security.
Rooted in the social sciences and humanistic inquiry, Dr. Velasco holds a PhD in Communication Studies from the University of Denver, as well as a master’s degree in Communication and English from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, and a Communication & Spanish double-major and Biology minor from the University of New Mexico.
