U.P.D. Mission Statement

The Sul Ross State University Police Department objective is to protect life, property, and to ensure the welfare of our academic community by creating and maintaining a sanctuary for safe and peaceful education. This objective is consistent with the mission of Sul Ross State University:

“Offering life-changing opportunities delivering quality undergraduate and graduate education. We foster critical thinking, creativity, and research, empowering our students to excel beyond the frontiers of what is possible. We are a Hispanic serving public institution for the residents of the U.S./Mexico borderlands, Southwest Texas region, and beyond.”

The University Police Department, located in the Briscoe Administration Building, room 100, maintains the safety and security of the entire campus and university community. The department employs 4 officers which include the Chief of Police, Assistant Chief and 2 patrol officers. The U.P.D. maintains a good working relationship with the area’s local, state and federal law enforcement agencies and emergency medical services. Officers with the department are commissioned peace officers and, as such, are vested with all powers, privileges and immunities of peace officers within the county, including all streets and roads, in which the university owns, rents, leases or otherwise controls property. These powers are in accordance with V.T.C.A. Education Code, Section 51.203 as amended by H.B. 391, effective Sept. 1, 1987.
